Education will never disappear, it will just transform itself

It is a fact that technology is rapidly changing the world around us. Therefore, people might be worried that it will replace the human factor in many areas. Education is not an exception: it also has to face new challenges that have appeared with the disruptive digital revolution. But even if technology might take over some tasks and abilities that students have been taught for decades, educators will always be needed. The teaching process just needs to adapt itself to the new digital world.

Today, the next big change coming in the classroom is to make students experience their learning. The more a student gets involved, the more he or she will be prone to learn. The Generation Z, also known as the iGeneration, lives new experiences all the time through games, apps, websites etc. They come across these everywhere outside the classroom. As a result, if you want to attract the attention of students during a lecture, you definitely should immerse them into an interactive environment.

Transform your class into an interactive experience

Prepare your class experience carefully

When you prepare your class, don’t hesitate to take your time. It needs a different organization. First, you must have a macro vision of what you want to bring to your students in order to find the micro elementsthat will allow those changes. The world that you are going to create will have its own vocabulary, its own universe and features. Never lose sight of your pedagogic goal and the relevancy of your interactions: who interacts with who and why?

Rethink the interactions

Interactions keep students motivated and give a rhythm to your way of teaching. Nevertheless, do not hesitate to try out new things and think of a new vision of the interaction. Bringing gamification into your classroom engages and involves students. For example you can organize a competition at the end of your class with a reward for the winner. It is not just bringing debates, it should be thoughtfully prepared and original; you need to give it time and dedication if you want it to work.

Reorganize your classroom

You might have to change the way your classroom is organized. Don’t hesitate to disrupt the usual entities of a class. One teacher in front a group of students is no longer optimal. Try out bringing two, three or more people together, put yourself out of your role of teacher or bring even other classes to your session. Don’t hesitate to rethink the place in a physical and a digital way to create a good atmosphere. By doing so, the vertical student-teacher relationship will also change and you might learn some things from your students yourself !

Choose project-based learning

Project-based learning is a student-centered pedagogy. It implies a dynamic classroom in which students acquire a knowledge that goes deeper thanks to an active exploration of real-world issues and challenges. It is different from what has existed for the last couple of years. In addition to academic skills, it allows them to work on their soft skills and their autonomy. Transversal skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, questioning and responsibility will also be enhanced.

Try and go digital

30 years ago, students got all their information from encyclopaedias, dictionaries and libraries and they were used to learn inside a classroom. Education has been a one-size-fits-all model; audio, visual and hands-on learners have been obliged to try and learn in ways that didn’t always fit what they needed.

Today, they can download an eBook or search for any topic on the Internet. Technology is opening up the world of education. More collaboration between people from all around the world is an opportunity, not a threat. Technology makes tailoring your way of teaching possible.
